Ice Age ultimately suffers from some of the same story problems that plague the latter installments in certain action franchises: unoriginality. It could be that there are only a few character arcs for a "children's movie" to follow but it's more likely that the variety of writers on the project (I count nine credited writers on IMDB) had a hard time coming up with a more compelling adventure. It's all character work we've seen before. Unlike other animated films, it is fairly hard to engage with these characters as they rarely seem to try anything new or throw some curveballs. Kids will likely enjoy the energy and vulnerability of Sid and be appropriately scared by Diego but Manny leaves a lot to be desired as the "flawed" mammoth with a tragic past. One by one we meet Sid the Sloth (Leguizamo), Diego (Leary) as the three are joined together to return a baby to its human family amid the chaos and noise of an approaching ice age. Next we meet Manny (Ray Romano), a moody mammoth bent bucking the migration trend. It's an impressive first scene in the animated film and an honest "wow" moment, the first of many to come. The Movie Ice Age opens with Scrat (a cross between a squirrel and a rat) punching an acorn through the ice which sets off a huge glacier movement. Ice Age brought in close to $180 million and is shaping up to be one of 2002's biggest moneymakers. Using their proprietary CGI Studio software, the company best known for effects work is now in the animation big leagues. Ice Age represents Blue Sky's first full-length feature film.
